The Move to Cape Town

Cape Town

It came very suddenly, but like most things sudden, had a long inevitability. When I was a youngster I'd always say that Cape Town would be my ideal place to live in South Africa. Here, I've always maintained, you get an overdose of all the things a creative and nature-inspired person could want.

Musings on art, music and touring

Meri Kenaz while drawing The Swallow-tree

I’m sitting on the couch, hovering between brainstorming with André over my new website’s layout, viewing a podcasting tutorial, and drawing on the new less-textured-for-better-scanning-in-of-pen-drawing board I got today.

The evolution that is Meri Kenaz

We see so many synthetically created musicians these days that sometimes a natural evolution is a refreshing change. As a young artist in South Africa, Meri Ké, or Meri Kenaz as she is now known, is showing continual growth. Not only is her music maturing and creeping into the hearts of audiences seeking sincerity and openness, but she claims her “music is taking [her] on exciting journeys and stimulating personal growth” as well.

Ever just felt like something great is going to happen?

I am blessed to be where I am now, a young artist in a beautiful country, which is at the very least always interesting. In the last year I have managed to overcome so many barriers, a lot of which admittedly mental. To always keep moving forward and keep an open mind has been such an important philosophy of mine, and it’s proven to open doors and windows where it seemed there were none.

Bye Bye Ocean, Hello Road.

What a trip! I’m in Port Elizabeth now after almost a month of touring South Africa with Blues virtuoso, Dan Patlansky. In two days I head back to our City of Gold to sleep in my own bed, see if my plants are still alive, and long once again to be back at the sea.

What's in a name?

Meri
Similar to “Mary” which has an obvious connotation to the Virgin Mary, and carries a strong symbolic reference to birth, creation, and warm maternal instincts.

“Mary” is of Finnish origin and means “Sea”. In English tradition it means “Mirthful”, and “Joyous”. In the mythology of the Bororo people of Brazil, Meri is a folk hero and sun-god. Do a numerology reading of “Meri” and you get a host of characteristics tending towards the love of freedom, adventure, compassion, and open-mindedness.

Tour with Dan Patlansky (and other happenings)

Finally I get to go to the coast again (my blood’s already starting to run again with the anticipation) and what better way to get there than on a National tour with Dan Patlansky?
